The livestock industry is thriving in the United States, and that’s not really a surprise. Aside from the common practices of growing livestock for food and productivity, however, there are other aspects that need to be taken into account, related to trends that many people don’t even know about.
Selective breeding practices have been employed in the livestock industry to an increasing extent in recent years. Rare and unique breeds often fetch a pretty penny at cattle auctions, so that explains part of the interest, and it's not broadcast in the livestock news you hear.
The other part has to do with the stock shows, rodeos and other special events where people from far and wide visit just to see some of the most unique and fascinating breeds of livestock in the world.
Finally, recent livestock trends tend to favor organic practices such as grazing, over just feeding cattle with hay and keeping them locked up inside the barn. In some cases, we have animal rights activists to thank for that, but the truth is many ranch owners are actually realizing the fact that natural practices are better – not only for the animals, but for a lot of industries related to animal husbandry, such as fertilizer manufacturing and milk production.
